Sports

The first Olympic Games of the modern era only included competitions in 9 sports. At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, five new sports were added to the programme, bringing the number of disciplines to 33. Baseball and softball are back after not being on the Olympic programme in 2012 and 2016. Furthermore, it was decided that the host may always choose an additional sport for the respective Games.

In order to introduce a discipline, at least 75 countries and four continents must practise this sport. With the 33rd Summer Olympic Games in Paris, the number of Olympic sports grows to a total of 45. Breaking, a competitive form of breakdancing, is a new Olympic discipline. Like sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing, all of which premiered at Tokyo 2020, all four are easy to learn and participants form communities that are very active on social media. Over the next five years, the inclusion of these sports in the Olympics will help to inspire millions of children to take up the sport.

The Olympic debut of Breaking
Breaking is a competitive form of breakdancing that involves footwork and athletic movements such as back or head turns. The athletes (known as B-Boys and B-Girls) are judged on a number of criteria during their routines, including technical ability, creativity, style, speed, strength, rhythm and skill.
